An urban “gift to Berlin,” this extension to the Haus der Kulturen der Welt expands exhibition capacity while fusing city life and culture under one walkable roof. A tough, near-brutalist shell of thick walls carves out acoustically and spatially distinct programs—galleries, a research library, bar, and a nighttime venue—stitched together by generous stairs and a single democratic elevator that serves all levels.
Circulation is conceived as free roam: visitors can meander across terraces, drift through quarterscapes, or climb over the building itself, using the roof as public ground. Structure, section, and circulation align to make exploration the primary exhibition space..
